Why do some silt fence installations fail during heavy rain?
The most common cause of silt fence failure is improper installation, particularly failing to trench the fabric into the ground correctly. If the bottom flap is not buried and compacted, water will easily flow underneath the barrier, causing severe erosion. Other common causes of failure include placing the barrier in areas with concentrated water flow, using low-quality wooden stakes that snap under pressure, or failing to clean out accumulated sediment, which leads to the structure collapsing under immense weight.
