How do you properly install a durable and steady silt fence?
To ensure a silt fence functions as intended, the bottom edge of the fabric must be buried in a trench that is at least six inches deep and six inches wide. This practice, known as slicing or trenching, prevents water from flowing underneath the fabric. After the fabric is placed in the trench, the soil must be backfilled and compacted firmly to lock the barrier in place. If the fabric is simply laid on top of the ground and weighed down with rocks, it will likely fail during the first significant storm, leading to environmental violations.
