How often should a silt fence be inspected and maintained?
Regular maintenance is the only way to guarantee that a silt fence continues to perform its environmental protection duties. Inspections should occur at least once a week and immediately after any rainfall event that produces significant runoff. During these checks, workers should look for signs of "undercutting," where water has washed away the soil beneath the silt fence, or "topping," where sediment has built up to the top of the fabric. If the accumulated sediment reaches about one third to one half of the height of the silt fence, it must be removed and disposed of properly to restore the capacity of the barrier. Any tears in the fabric or broken stakes should be repaired or replaced immediately to maintain the perimeter. Constant vigilance ensures the silt fence remains a compliant and effective tool for erosion control.
