What are the standard steps for installing a silt fence correctly?
Installing a silt fence correctly requires a specific sequence of actions to ensure it does not "blow out" during the first rain event. First, a trench must be excavated approximately six inches deep and six inches wide along the proposed line of the barrier. The fabric of the silt fence is then placed into the trench, with the bottom portion laid flat against the floor and sides of the excavation. After the fabric is positioned, the trench is backfilled and compacted thoroughly to anchor the silt fence firmly into the ground. The stakes are then driven into the soil on the downslope side of the fabric to provide support against the pressure of the water. Ensuring the fabric is tight and the stakes are spaced closely together will prevent the silt fence from sagging or leaning over when it becomes loaded with sediment.
