How do you properly install a silt fence into soil?
Installation begins with digging a trench approximately six inches deep and six inches wide along the proposed line of the barrier. The bottom edge of the silt fence fabric is tucked into this trench, and the soil is backfilled and compacted over the fabric to create a physical seal. This prevents water from "undercutting" the fence, which is the most common cause of failure in sediment control systems. Once the bottom is secure, the fabric is attached to the stakes, ensuring it is pulled taut to prevent sagging when the silt fence encounters the pressure of runoff.
