What is the current situation of mulching film prices in the Philippines, and how do plastic mulch films compare w
Mulching film prices in the Philippines vary depending on material type, thickness, width, and whether the product is locally produced or imported. Plastic mulch films, usually made from polyethylene (PE), are the most commonly used due to their affordability and durability. On average, plastic mulch film prices are lower, making them accessible to small and medium-scale farmers. These films are widely used in vegetable farming, fruit plantations, and commercial agriculture because they effectively control weeds, retain soil moisture, and regulate soil temperature.
However, plastic mulch films present environmental challenges. After use, they must be collected and disposed of properly, which adds labor costs. Improper disposal can lead to soil pollution and contribute to plastic waste, a growing concern in the Philippines.
In contrast, biodegradable plastic mulch films are more expensive upfront. Their higher price is due to advanced manufacturing processes and the use of biodegradable polymers such as PLA (polylactic acid) or starch-based materials. Despite the higher initial cost, biodegradable mulch films eliminate the need for removal after harvest, as they decompose naturally in the soil. This reduces labor expenses and long-term environmental impact.
While traditional plastic mulch films remain dominant in the Philippine market due to cost sensitivity, biodegradable alternatives are slowly gaining attention, especially among environmentally conscious farmers and government-supported sustainable agriculture programs.
