What’s the Best Type of Pond Liner for a Large Pond – EPDM, Polyethylene, or PVC?
When building a large pond, choosing the right pond liner is critical to ensuring long-term durability, ease of installation, and water retention. Among the most popular options are EPDM, polyethylene, and PVC liners.
EPDM pond liners are often considered the premium choice, especially for large or irregularly shaped ponds. Made from flexible synthetic rubber, EPDM is UV-resistant, eco-friendly, and highly elastic—ideal for custom ponds that may have curves, shelves, or slopes. While slightly more expensive, EPDM’s longevity (20–30 years or more) makes it a worthwhile investment.
Polyethylene pond liners are a more budget-friendly option. These are typically less flexible than EPDM but still offer good puncture resistance and UV protection. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used for large-scale or commercial applications where shape flexibility is less important. It’s also more rigid, making it better suited for rectangular or geometric ponds.
