Geomembrane thickness depends on the intended application, the type of material being contained, expected mechanical stress, ground conditions, and project specifications. Thicker liners may be required in demanding applications where puncture resistance and durability are important.
For example, a landfill or mining containment project may require different liner specifications from a small agricultural pond. The underlying surface also matters. Rough ground, sharp particles, and heavy loads can increase the risk of damage if the liner and protective layers are not properly selected.
Chemical exposure, temperature variations, installation methods, and expected service life should also be considered. Thickness alone does not determine overall performance because resin quality, manufacturing consistency, tensile properties, and seam strength are important too.
Project designers should follow relevant engineering standards and applicable regulations instead of selecting a liner based only on price.
A suitable thickness, combined with proper surface preparation and installation, helps ensure that the geomembrane performs reliably under the conditions for which it was designed.
