Geonet and geotextile are both geosynthetic materials, but they perform different primary functions. Geonet is mainly designed to create drainage pathways, while geotextile is commonly used for filtration, separation, reinforcement, protection, or drainage depending on its structure and application. A geonet has a three-dimensional net-like structure with channels that allow liquids to move. A geotextile is generally a permeable textile manufactured from synthetic fibers. These materials can also work together. For example, a geotextile may be placed against soil to prevent fine particles from entering a geonet drainage core. The geonet then carries the collected liquid through its internal channels. This combination is often known as a drainage geocomposite. Choosing between them is not simply a matter of deciding which material is stronger. Their functions are different. A project requiring soil filtration may need geotextile, while a project requiring a defined high-flow drainage pathway may require geonet. In many engineered systems, using both materials together can provide more complete performance than using either one alone.
