Geonet and geotextile are both geosynthetic materials, but they generally perform different primary functions. Geonet is mainly designed to provide drainage pathways, while geotextile is commonly used for separation, filtration, reinforcement, or protection depending on its construction.
The structure explains much of the difference. Geonet has a three-dimensional network of ribs that creates channels for water movement. Geotextile is typically a fabric-like sheet that can allow water to pass through while restricting the movement of soil particles. Because their functions differ, the two materials are often used together rather than treated as competing products.
For example, a Geonet can create a drainage layer, while a geotextile placed against it can act as a filter. The geotextile helps prevent fine soil particles from entering and blocking the drainage channels. This combination can create a more efficient drainage system.
