What is a copper based PCB?
Copper based PCBs are the most expensive among metal core PCBs, with better thermal conductivity than aluminum and iron-based PCBs. They are suitable for high-frequency circuit design, as well as fields with high and low temperature variations, and complex communication equipment and building decoration industries. There are various types of copper based PCBs, such as gold-plated copper based PCBs, silver plated copper based PCBs, hot air soldering leveling (HASL) copper based PCBs, and oxidation resistant copper based PCBs.
Copper based PCB layers have a great demand for current carrying, so thick copper foils ranging from 35 μ m to 280 μ m are made. The thermal insulation layer has a significant impact on copper based PCBs, and their thermal conductivity is mainly composed of aluminum oxide and silicon powder, as well as polymers filled with epoxy resin. In addition, copper based PCBs have many advantages, such as a low thermal resistance of 0.15, good adhesive and plastic properties, heat aging resistance, and mechanical and thermal stress. Copper based PCB metal substrate plays an important role in copper based PCB. Copper based PCB is the supporting component of copper based PCB, mainly playing an important role in heat dissipation, shielding, covering or grounding. But it needs to have high thermal conductivity and be suitable for some normal mechanical processing, such as drilling, punching, and cutting.
Heavy copper PCB boards (also being called thick copper board, power board etc) are usually bonded with a layer of copper foil on a glass epoxy substrate. The thickness of copper foil is usually 18μm, 35μm, 55μm and 70μm. The most commonly used copper foil thickness is 35μm. The thickness of copper foil used in China is generally 35-50μm, and there are also thinner ones such as 10μm and 18μm; and thicker ones such as 70μm. The thickness of the composite copper foil on a substrate with a thickness of 1-3mm is about 35μm; the thickness of the composite copper foil on a substrate with a thickness of less than 1mm is about 18μm, and the thickness of a composite copper foil on a substrate with a thickness of more than 5mm is about 55μm. If the thickness of the copper foil on the PCB is 35μm and the printed line width is 1mm, then for every 10mm length, its resistance value is about 5mΩ, and its inductance is about 4nH. When the di/dt of the digital integrated circuit chip on the PCB is 6mA/ns and the working current is 30mA, the resistance and inductance contained in each 10mm printed line are used to estimate the noise voltage generated by each part of the circuit to be 0.15. mV and 24mV.
Copper-based PCB or copper core PCB is a metal core PCB that uses copper as the base material in place of commonly used FR4. Like all metal core PCBs, it also has three main layers. The top layer is made of copper, which is responsible for the electrical connection between the components. This layer is standard in all types of PCBs. The second layer is the dielectric layer that prevents current from the top layer to the base layer. Although this layer is electrically an insulator, it is a good conductor of heat. It transfers the heat produced by the components and helps in heat dissipation. The bottom layer of the PCB is copper, which is why it is a copper core PCB.
Advantages of heavy copper PCB board
Compared with aluminum PCB, copper based PCB has high thermal conductivity, twice that of aluminum PCB. The higher the thermal conductivity, the higher the thermal conductivity and the better the heat dissipation. Copper based materials can be plated through holes, but aluminum based materials cannot. However, the network of plated through holes needs to be the same in order for the signal to have good grounding performance. At the same time, copper has weldability and can ultimately be used to install and weld designed structural components. More importantly, the copper base on the copper based PCB can be etched into a good pattern, and after processing, it will have a convex shape, which is good for the components. Needless to say, the components can be directly attached to the convex shape, which has a great impact on good grounding and heat dissipation. Because copper and aluminum have different elastic moduli, for example, for copper, its elastic modulus is about 121000 MPa, but for aluminum, its elastic modulus is around 72000 MPa. The warpage and shrinkage of copper based PCBs are smaller than those of aluminum based PCBs, making them more stable in performance.
Heavy copper plate has the characteristics of carrying large current, reducing thermal strain, and good heat dissipation.
1. The heavy copper circuit board can carry large current
In the case of a certain line width, increasing the copper thickness is equivalent to increasing the cross-sectional area of the circuit, which can carry a larger current, so it has the characteristic of carrying a large current.
2. Heavy copper circuit boards reduce thermal strain
Copper foil has a small electrical conductivity (also called electrical resistivity ), the temperature rise is small when a large current is passed, so it can reduce the amount of heat and thereby reduce the thermal strain.
Metal “conductors” are divided into: ” silver→copper→gold→aluminum→tungsten→nickel→iron ” according to conductivity.
3. The heavy copper circuit board has good heat dissipation
Copper foil has high thermal conductivity (thermal conductivity 401W/mK), which can play an important role in improving heat dissipation performance, so it has good heat dissipation;
Thermal conductivity refers to the heat transfer through an area of 1 square meter within 1H for a 1 meter thick material with a temperature difference of 1°C on both sides under stable heat transfer conditions, measured by W/m·K.
As the more active star products in the metal substrate, copper base PCBs and aluminium substrate PCBs have their advantages and are widely used, which are common in cars, stage lights, control panels, photographic lights, projection lights, Stage laser lamps and other products are excellent high-power accessories.
Copper Base PCBs are an essential part of high-performance electronics. It is characterized by a copper substrate that can enhance thermal conductivity and heat dissipation. Copper base PCBs are critical for applications that require efficient thermal management, such as LED lighting, power electronics, and high-frequency circuits, ensuring their reliability and longevity under demanding conditions.
